Ngā Taonga

Creating a unique learning environment that empowers tamariki, to connect with their language, land, culture and identity:

Ngā hononga ki te Reo, whakapapa, whenua, ahurei me te tuakairi Māori.

Ngā Taonga is a kaupapa Māori enrichment programme at Waverley Park School, offered to tamariki with a whakapapa and/or wairua connection to Te Ao Māori.

This programme was developed in 2015 in response to the aspirations of our WPS Māori whānau and tamariki.

The programme runs in school time from 11am-12.30pm on Fridays.

Ngā Taonga has places for 30 tamariki each term - 10 places for junior tamariki, 10 for middle school tamariki and 10 places for senior tamariki.

Ngā Taonga -  Guiding Principles

WHAKAPAPA

Establishing, valuing and maintaining connections to our own whakapapa, to each other, to our whenua.

TE REO AND TIKANGA MĀORI

Learning our language and customs, and upholding our cultural practices

WHANAUNGATANGA

Building and nurturing strong, positive and reciprocal relationships with each other, with our whānau, our hapori and with manawhenua

MANAAKITANGA

Expressing aroha in our actions and interactions, being caring and respectful to all people

RANGATIRATANGA

Upholding the mana of people in all that we do. Empowering ourselves and our whānau by leading by example, especially in the reconnection to our Māoritanga

WAIRUATANGA

Acknowledging  and validating our Māori worldview and traditional knowledge; Nurturing and validating those beliefs

KOTAHITANGA

Working as a collective, together and always in support of each other and of our whānau

Ngā Taonga - Our Aspirations

To enhance the mana of tamariki and whānau by providing positive and uplifting Māori experiences.

To ignite children’s passion for their Māori identity and the desire to pursue further cultural learning.

To welcome and encourage whānau to attend so that they can grow in knowledge and skills with their tamaiti.

To form strong relationships with our school whānau, hapori, local Iwi, Rūnaka and Marae.

For tamariki to take away experiences and knowledge that they can add to their own ‘kete’ of knowledge. They can then become the tuakana and share the learning with their classmates, their teachers and their whānau.

To provide our tamariki and whānau with invaluable experiences, values, knowledge and skills to enhance all aspects of their hauora - wellbeing.
